According to CNN, Motor Trend magazine has named the Tesla Model S its 2012 Car of the Year. The car made history this week by becoming the first all-electric plug-in luxury car ever selected for the prestigious award.

The magazine stated at the New York ceremony that the car won unanimously as other vehicles that finished in the top three didn't get more than three votes.

"At its core, the Tesla Model S is simply a damned good car you happen to plug in to refuel," editor-at-large Angus MacKenzie wrote in an article about the award.

The Model S is advertised on their website as one of the "smoothest electric cars" ever produced while still being able to drive fast like a sports car, with the space capacity of an SUV.

The magazine deemed the Model S as one of the most "efficient" cars the magazine has ever tested. The vehicle gets 74.5 miles to the gallon according to the company's website while still being able to reach a speed of over 60 mph in just four seconds.

"This is a point at which the gears of history moved," said Tesla CEO Elon Musk. "I hope that other automakers will copy us and follow through and do electric cars with more vigor."

Since the car runs strictly off of electric power, the front and back of the vehicle can be used as cargo space providing more comfort for passengers inside the vehicle. The Model S can hold seven people inside as well.

You can purchase the Model S that can go 160 miles on a single charge for $50,000 or the 300 mile version which sells for $100,000.

To qualify for the Motor Trend Car of the Year award a vehicle has to go through a number of different tests and competes directly against other cars. This year 25 different new models competed against one another. An SUV or truck cannot win the award as they have their own separate awards given out by the magazine.
