N.J. Hit By Small Earthquake Overnight, Felt In 7 Counties, Leaves No Injuries

A 2.0 earthquake struck around 1:19 a.m. on Monday in over seven New Jersey counties, many of which are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Experts believe the quake was just three miles below ground.

The earthquake started at around Ringwood County, an area that is still trying to get power back and has a great deal of downed trees due to Hurricane Sandy according to The Huffington Post.  The Ringwood police put out a press statement saying that no one was hurt from the earthquake.

Geophysicist Jessica Turner at the National Earthquake Information Center said in a press statement that some residents have reported hearing a loud boom early Monday. Turner stated that those on upper floors of a home might have "felt shaking or saw objects on walls vibrate" drastically.

The effects of the earthquake could also be felt in Wanaque, Oakland, Mahwah, Franklin Lakes, Paterson and West Milford Counties. There have been no injuries reported in these counties either.

On a normal week the earthquake would be quite a big deal in N.J. as they rarely have to deal with earthquakes compared to places like California and Hawaii. The earthquake was nothing compared to the damage the entire east coast is still suffering from after Hurricane Sandy struck this time last week.

Many N.J. locations are still without power, but if not having power is your biggest problem you came out pretty lucky. Homes and vehicles have been completely destroyed due to Sandy, and dangerous loose wires can still be found lying around on the side of the road in many locations.

Beach areas in N.J. are still trying to just clean the damage caused by Sandy before even thinking about putting the power back on. Many locations are still suffering from flooding or have been completely whipped away due to the storm.

The last reported earthquake was when a 2.2 earthquake struck in Feb. 2012 according to Yahoo.
