NJ Transit Suffers Setback, Power Coming Back Slower Than Expected, Only One Train Running To Penn Station (SEE SCHEDULE)

After being closed for four full days, some NJ Transit trains are back on track and heading into New York City.

Trains are currently running a limited time schedule from Trenton to New York Penn Station on the Northeast Corridor Line. The company is hoping to get more trains heading from New Jersey into New York this weekend.

"Amtrak gave us the go-ahead late last night," said John Durso, Jr, spokesman for NJ Transit. "We have trains running into New York Penn station."

NJ Transit is also hoping by the weekend to get trains between Woodbridge and Newark Penn Station on the NJ coast line running. They were planning on running it today, but a backup generator failed around 2:30 a.m. meaning they couldn't control signals or the flow of train traffic on those railway lines according to The Star-Ledger

"The good news is that four days after a hurricane devastated the Garden State, New Jersey trains are again running into Penn Station," NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. said today according to The Star-Ledger.

Bus lines have received better news the past couple of days however, as 80 percent of NJ Transit routes have resumed service to and from N.Y. and N.J. Light rail vehicles have also started running from Camden to Trenton as well according to Newsday.

NJ Transit is reporting that 65 of their 203 rail engines and 257 of their 1,162 cars were damaged during the week due to salt water from Hurricane Sandy. The equipment damaged was a mix of newer and older cars and rails, some of which were due to be replaced anyway. There is more of an urgency to do so now however.

"The exposure to salt water impacted gear boxes and traction motors," said Durso to The Star-Ledger. "This impact will result in routine repairs and will not result in the loss of any rail equipment."
