What happened to GoPro's Karma Drone? In a press release about the CES 2017, the tech company revealed that they will be relaunching their Karma drone.
GoPro's CEO Nick Woodman said that the Karma was more than a drone. The drone was to be used primarily with their cameras. In effect, it was a complete video stabilization system that could be worn, held, and flown.
But the real problem with the Karma drone was with its price. It was too expensive for a drone. Since it was essentially a GoPro Hero that could fly, it had to be priced similar to the original Hero. Ultimately, if someone was going to buy a GoPro Hero, it would make sense to just buy the flying drone instead.
The Karma drone was officially launched in September 0f 2016. The GoPro Karma drone retailed for $799. However, just weeks after it went on sale it was recalled.
In November, GoPro recalled around 2,500 Karma drone units since it was released on Oct. 23, 2016. The reason for the recall was several of the units were reported to fall out of the sky.
The GoPro Karma Drone: What Went Wrong? The GoPro Karma drone relaunch was mentioned in an official announcement detailing the American technology company's involvement in CES 2017. The company also explained that the power loss of the previous drones has been modified. It was due to mechanical issues related to keeping the drone's battery in place.
The Karma drone recall added insult to injury for GoPro. The company had a very bad year with its stock price consistently dropping throughout 2016. The company was even forced to lay off nearly 15% of its staff immediately after the Karma recall.
With the relaunch announcement, GoPro will hopefully be headed for a good year. The Karma drone will officially relaunch in February. There has been no announcement if its price and other specs will remain the same.
