The spectacular Porsche 918 Spyder is again subject to a new call for review, this time promoted by the NHTSA. It will only affect 300 units of the 918 Spyder that were marketed in the United States. This is the 4th time the Porsche 918 Spyder was recalled, 3 of them related to undercarriages where its worst consequence can lead to loss of control.
There is no doubt that Porsche has built a truly amazing hypercar known as the Porsche 918 Spyder. In just 6 months, the Porsche 918 Spyder has already faced two calls for review, four in total since its debut. The first one during Summer 2016 and just before 2016 ended, there was another call for review. It was again promoted by the NHTSA and only US units were involved, according to News18.
The first call for review's problem was due to a defect with the seatbelts and the second issue involved the car's suspension. As with the previous 3 calls for review, only a handful of the Porsche 918 Spyders were affected. The fourth call of review was due to a manufacturing defect in the lower suspension arms, a possible break affecting 306 units of the model manufactured between Nov. 6, 2013 and July 27, 2016 according to MotorAuthority.
This failure can cause the lower arm to break and might lead to a loss of control of the vehicle in very demanding scenarios. This resulted to Porsche recommending not to use the vehicles until they're fixed. Repairs will be in 2017 and although no date has been assigned yet, this will be free for Porsche 918 Spyder owners.
Since the Porsche 918 Spyder was launched, owners are used to being advised to replace certain minor details. On one occasion, it was due to electrical problems affecting all units in all markets. This problem was located on a carbon fiber element which could damage the electrical wiring of the fan in the radiator. On some instances, only 6 units were affected and on some, the seat belts are affected.
Jjust recently, 200 customers were called to replace an unspecified chassis element and again the repair was carried out by the brand itself. With the latest Porsche 918 Spyder call to review, people are starting to feel unhappy as recalls are not normal for a supercar especially for expensive ones, like the Porsche 918 Spyder, which sells for around a million dollars.
