As of 9 a.m. today, the Microsoft Surface tablet is officially available for preorder with a starting price of $499 for the 32 GB model. The 64 GB model is $699.
In a surprising move most likely done thanks to the news that Apple will be revealing the iPad mini just three days before the Surface is released, Microsoft set the pricing and availability numbers that Apple now has to one-up.
The current set price for the iPad is between $599 and $400, so the base Tablet price will be right around the same as its competitor. It will be up to customers to decide which they want to spend their money on more. The price for the iPad mini is not known yet.
The new tablet weighs 1.5 pounds, but reportedly doesn't feel heavier than the 1.46-pound Apple iPad according to CNN.
The 10.6-inch tablet is also larger than an iPad and most other tablets available for purchase currently. Since the tablet is so large, Microsoft had to come up with a device that would keep the battery running. They believe they have successfully done so and that most users will be able to use the tablet for an entire day without having to re-charge, while also avoiding a bulky battery as well.
Microsoft included an impressive 2 GB of RAM inside the Surface, as well as a Nvidia Tegra T30 processor according to CNN. The iPad 1 GB and uses a compared to the Apple A5x Dual-Core processor according to PC Magazine. The Surface comes with Bluetooth capability, compass dial microphones, a USB 2.0 port and two 720p cameras.
As expected each tablet is has Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 already installed. Both features have been worked on to better accommodate the touch-screen device.
The tablet, like the iPad, comes with a 1 year warranty. Interested customers can purchase the tablet at Surface.com and all tablets will ship out on Oct. 26.
