The 2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class is already on its way and will be introduced to North America, China and other global markets. The new compact sedan, defying expectations, will slot between the CLA and C-Class sedans in the German automaker’s lineup.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class is arriving in a manner unexpected by the world market. It was first thought to be the German brand's entry-level sedan to its luxury segment, but according to MotorAuthority, it will be above the next CLA, which will gain a second generation around 2018, and below the current Class C.
The change of position of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class, which was expected to be a sedan smaller and cheaper than the CLA, makes it a direct rival of the Audi A3, Acura ILX and the BMW 1 Series.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class will now be larger and more expensive than the four-door coupe, and everything points to the same space inside for passengers and luggage. As it is known, the current Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series measures around 4.45 m with axes ranging from 2.63 to 2.67 m, respectively. With this, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class should be above the 4.63 m and 2.70 m of CLA's current axles and below the 4.68 m and 2.84 m of the Class C base.
The new Class sedan will come with front- and all-wheel drive 4Matic, and for the Chinese market, there will be a long wheelbase version made by Mercedes with the Mercedes Class C and Class E. In the engines, one will find a turbocharged range of three and four cylinders petrol and diesel; the top end is a 2.0-liter with 400 hp, which will power the Mercedes 4Matic sedan A45.
There will also be a hybrid variant, according to InsideEVs, and it will incorporate a gasoline block and a small electric motor with a lithium-ion battery, although it is not yet known its autonomy range will be.
The range of Access versions will be equipped with an engine (1.5 diesel and 1.6 petrol) borrowed from the Renault-Nissan alliance, but with an update. Depending on the engine chosen, the 2018 Mercedes A Class sedan will be available with six-speed manual transmission and a nine-speed automatic dual clutch transmission.
