One of the stars of the Paris Motor Show this year was the 2018 BMW X2 Concept, a bold new addition to the German automaker's SUV/crossover lineup that is scheduled to hit the market on the second quarter of 2018. Featuring the latest design innovations by BMW, it is also a taste of what could show up on upcoming X vehicles.
The 2018 BMW X2 will be produced at the Regensburg factory of BMW in Germany, together with the company's second-generation X1, the X2's sister model. The X2 concept carries many signature BMW designs, such as the big center air intake on the front of the SUV under the kidney grille, but an overall sleeker appearance thanks to dark coating found at the rear.
The most significant change in the design from the X1, however, is extra width on the front, ultimately giving the 2018 BMW X2 its bolder, more hardcore look, according to BMW Blog. Other characteristics, like a sportier roofline, shorter overhang at the front and upright kidney grilles add to the massive, powerful appearance.
A closer look at the concept proves the devil is in the details, with great finishes like "X"'s in the headlights and C-pillar roundels. Karim Habib, BMW design chief, explains that the 2018 BMW X2 combines the swift-moving body language of a coupe with the "robust construction" typical to X models, according to Autocar.
There is no shortage of power under the hood, with BMW's standard turbocharged three and four-cylinder engine being the force behind the 2018 BMW X2. All these elements, including its five door layout and overall sportiness, are expected to make the X2 a direct rival to other SUVs like the Range Rover Evoque and Audi Q4.
Although the preview was only a concept, Habib promised that the 2018 BMW X2 production version will come extremely close. The starting price of the X2 is set at an estimated £30,000 ($38,000).
