Drivers of the 2013 Infiniti JX35 may have unaccountably found themselves out of gas.
Nissan has issued a recall of the luxury crossover because of a defect that can keep the driver oblivious to an emptying fuel tank. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - the government body that oversees recalls - the affected JX35s were manufactured from February 15, 2012 through June 22, 2012.
The units are liable to an assembly defect whereby the fuel transfer tube may be misrouted inside the fuel tank. This could result in the transfer tube becoming trapped under the float or under the pump module, two scenarios that both result in the fuel level on the dashboard gauge remaining stationary as fuel is consumed.
Nissan received a field report in mid-May of a JX35 running out of fuel when the gauge showed fuel remaining. After the fuel tank supplier, TI Automotive, reported that there was no problem with their parts, Nissan concluded that the incident was an isolated one.
When more such reports came in, however, Nissan launched an investigation.
Other Infiniti models are believed not to be affected because the assembly procedure relative to the recall is unique to the JX35.
Nissan alerted dealers to the recall on August 13. The recall will begin on September 4, with Nissan notifying owners of the steps for them to take. Dealers will check potentially affected JX35s, and will reroute the fuel transfer tube and install a new O-ring. The repairs will be completed free of charge.
