Honda has disclosed estimates of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012.
"By calculating and disclosing global GHG emissions as a responsible company engaged in the area of mobility, Honda will continue making proactive progress with its global initiatives to reduce GHG and further extend the Honda LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) approach," the company said in a statement.
The emissions were calculated according to the criteria set down by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute for GHG Accounting. The protocol looks at three scopes of business activities, two of which Honda has been disclosing since 2009, and the third of which Honda began calculating this year. Part of the third category was calculated and released in June, and the final part was released August 27.
The first scope is emissions from company operations, such as those from combustion of fuel at factories and from operation of company vehicles. Honda puts these emissions as having a carbon dioxide equivalent of 1.24 million metric tons.
The second scope is indirect emissions, such as those caused by generating the electricity purchased to power the company's factories and offices. For these, Honda estimates a carbon dioxide equivalent of 2.96 million metric tons.
The third, and by far the largest, scope is emissions from customer use of the company's products. Honda estimates this at 195.88 million metric tons.
There are other, smaller categories not included in the main scopes. Among these are such factors as employee commuting and end-of-life treatment of company products. In total, Honda estimates its total emissions as having a carbon dioxide equivalent of 225.06 million metric tons during the year.
