Detroit lawyer and "King of the Lemon Laws" Vince Megna received a check for $618,000 from Mercedes-Benz this week, in a case that has been pending since 2005.
Megna represented Marco Marquez of Waukesha, Wisconsin, who seven years ago paid $56,000 for a Mercedes E320.
As reported by Yahoo Autos, the Mercedes frequently failed to start, and Marquez lawyered up in order to take advantage of one of the so-called lemon laws that exist in every state. In general, the laws allow buyers of defective cars to receive reimbursements or whole new cars.
Mercedes claims that it did try to make good on the car, but that Marquez deliberately obstructed the funds from entering his bank account in order to inflate damages.
The case dragged for six years, but two months ago the Wisconsin Supreme Court ordered the carmaker to pay up.
They didn't pay up fast enough for Megna's liking, and he filed garnishments for money and property against all six Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Manhattan.
He posted a Youtube video showing his attempts to collect. In the video, he wears an enormous Mercedes emblem around his neck.
Mercedes finally capitulated and hand delivered a check to flamboyant lawyer. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Mercedes lawyers informed Megna that they would pay in a letter in which they said, "Your actions serve no legitimate purpose, and can only have been motivated by an intent to harass and intimidate Mercedes-Benz and its dealerships and to disrupt their business operations."
Megna's website claims that he has tried over 1,500 Lemon Law cases with positive results, and that he has sued General Motors 700 times without losing.
