Jaguar has confirmed that the C-X75 - the two-seater hybrid plug-in electric "supercar" revealed in concept form at the 2010 Paris Motor Show - will be available for purchase in the next couple of years.
The model was given its name in honor of Jaguar's 75th anniversary.
The production form will have a more civilized engine than the jet turbine system used in the concept, but will nonetheless have an internal combustion engine designed for it through Jaguar's collaboration with the racecar builder Williams F1.
It will also incorporate a battery Kinetic Energy Regeneration System (KERS) developed in Formula One and adapted for production vehicles, making it capable of traveling more than 31 miles on electric power. On gasoline power, Jaguar expects it to get 55 miles per gallon, even while achieving a speed of 200 miles per hour and going from 0 to 60 in less than three seconds and 0 to 100 in less than six.
Jaguar engineers recently sat down with British car magazine Evo, which reports that the car is to have two electric motors capable of three times the power of their conventional counterparts. One powers the C-X75's front axle, and the other powers its rear wheels.
The aerodynamic "simple tubular fuselage" exterior will be retained, and Jaguar is using carbon-fibre for the chassis to make the car as lightweight as possible. Low drag and maximum downforce are ensured by an underbody system that incorporates a moveable aerofoil and directional control of exhaust gases.
"We were always determined that the Project Jaguar C-X75 would be as striking on the road as it was in concept form," said Jaguar's design director Ian Callum. "This will be one of the finest looking Jaguar's ever produced. We have to make changes to bring this car to the market, but I know it will retain all the visual impact of the original concept car."
The Jaguar engineers told Evo that they are planning to produce 200 units of the car, which - considering that they foresee a price tag for each of approximately $1.26 million dollars - should be plenty.
