Tom Cruise’s Risky Business Porsche 928 for Sale

Though not as iconic a part of movie-dom as the tighty-whitey-clad dance to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" he did in the same flick, the 1979 Porsche 928 that Tom Cruise's character drove in the 1983 hit Risky Business is up for auction this month.

No, it is not the car that ended up being rolled into Lake Michigan in the movie. That 928 was only a gutted "dump car", according to Profiles in History, the auctioneers that is selling the 928 as part of its Hollywood Auction on July 30-31 in Calabasas Hills, California.

This car is one of three 928s used for Cruise's character, and enjoyed considerably more screen-time than the other two, which were on-hand largely to keep production from being slowed if it was damaged or in need of repairs.

It is the only one of the three whose involvement in the film can be definitively documented. The VIN number - 9289201213 - appears in production records.

The car was the subject of a documentary called The Quest for the RB928, in which filmmaker Lewis Johnsen reveals his obsession with the car and his journey to track it down. In the documentary, Risky Business's producer Jon Avnet says that this 928 is the very car on which Cruise learned to drive a stick shift.

Originally green, it was painted gold for the movie and painted white afterwards. After being tracked down by Johnsen, it was returned to its gold paintjob and put on display in the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver.

It has a five-speed manual transmission, 16-inch offset 5-hole aluminum alloy wheels, and cork on cork leather interior.

The 928 is often called one of the popular failures of Porsche's manufacturing history, and this tends to be reflected in the resale values of surviving models. This particular 928, however, is expected to fetch $40-60,000.

It is not the only high-profile 928 being auctioned this month. A 928 S owned by his late father is being auctioned by Prince Albert of Monaco.
