iPhone 5 Release Date Rumor: Smaller 19-Pin Dock Charger Likely

Apple had been rumored to make a smaller dock charger on its upcoming iPhone, and it appears that the rumor may turn out to be true.

Reuters reported this morning that Apple’s next smartphone, dubbed iPhone 5, will have 19-pin connector, citing “two sources familiar with the matter”. The rationale for replacing the current 30-pin port is “to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom”, the report said.

This is not the first time to hear rumors about the 19-pin dock charger. In China, iPhone 5 cases are already on sale at online commerce websites, reflecting smaller charger. The change will undoubtedly affect iPhone-related accessory makers.

“It represents an opportunity for accessory vendors," said analyst Pete Cunningham from Canalys, Reuters reported.

"The iPhone connector has been a standard for a long time now and I would expect the same to be true for a new connector, should Apple change it as expected,” Cunningham added.

The iPhone 5 release date has not been announced by the company yet, but experts speculate that the device will come sometime between August and October of this year. October release is most likely, because iPhone 4S was launched October last year. Some suggests it will be unveiled on Oct. 5 to commemorate Steven Job’s death. However, some rumors suggest Apple is planning to launch earlier in order to compete with its competitors, such as Samsung Galaxy S3.

Some of the other rumors about the device include an A6 quad-core processor with Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 6. The iOS 6 is expected to have new in-house developed Maps app with 3D view and turn-by-turn navigation. The Siri voice function will also see an improvement.

Another big change rumor will be the increased screen size. Apple is rumored to replace its 3.5-inch screen with a 4.0-inch screen with 16:9 aspect ratio. Some of the other rumors suggested near-field-communication (NFC) and 4G LTE.
