Windows 8 will be released on Oct 26, according to Windows President Steven Sinofsky’s announcement on Wednesday at the Microsoft’s annual sales meeting. The release information was posted on Windows official blog by Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft’s Communications Manager.
The operating system will be available for both an upgrade from previous Windows versions as well as for a new PC, according to LeBlanc. Windows 8 is expected to become available to enterprises in August, as Information Week reported.
Preview of Windows 8 suggests that the new OS will see a big change in its user interface from previous versions. Sinofsky said they have “reimagined” Windows and applied the Metro interface with “Live Tiles” blocks. The new OS will also be touch interactive.
There will be four editions available for the new OS: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Enterprise, and Windows 8 RT. Windows 8 RT is designed for mobile devices, including the Surface tablet.
According to previous reports, the upgrade will be available to download at only $39.99, with Windows Media Center as a free option to the package. The promotion will run through Jan 31, 2013. DVD version will be available at $69.99. Windows 7 Home Premium costs $119.99.
