The Russian government has decided to block access to one of the world's leading pornographic website, Pornhub. The adult website was among several other online pages blacklisted by the government that was released on Tuesday.
However, the Russian court is still in the process of determining if the ruling will stand at a later date. It can be remembered that the country has previously blocked access to the site last year when a court in the Southern city of Krasnodar judged it at having violated child protection laws.
Additionally, the court also ruled that Pornhub illegally produced and disseminated pornographic content, a crime punishable by two to six years in prison.
Roskomnadzor, Russia's media watchdog, is standing its ground regarding the ruling despite social media backlash - tongue-in-cheek though it was - from thousands of its citizens. One civilian went on to Twitter to ask the government media watchdog if it has any alternative should the ruling stand.
Roskomnadzor's official Twitter account replied to the said tweet with this: "As an alternative, you could meet someone in real life." Aside from Pornhub, the Russian government has also opted to ban yet another pornographic website, Youporn.
While production of porn materials is illegal in the country, its current laws does not punish those who are consuming pornography. In April 2015, a court in Tatarstan ruled that all porn website will be viewed as illegal in Russia despite the fact that major sites continuously produce pornographic content in the country.
The government also briefly banned Wikipedia last year after the site refused to delete a page containing drug use. The ruling came from a small town court in southern Russia ordering the site to take down an article that has "harmful information" regarding an Indian form of hashish called charas.
