BMW will allow drivers of certain models to speak, listen to, edit, and respond to emails and text messages while keeping their hands at ten and two. Using Dragon Drive! Messaging by Nuance Communications, drivers can employ voice recognition to format emails while they drive.
Dragon Drive! is the latest feature of BMW ConnectedDrive, BMW's information and navigation system. It becomes available as an option this month in the BMW 7 Series, and will become an option later this year in the 3 Series Touring and 3 Series ActiveHybrid.
"People want to connect with family, friends, and colleagues while they're on the road, but without the dangerous distractions posed by manually engaging handheld devices," Arnd Weil, Nuance's automotive manager, said in a statement. "By integrating Dragon Drive! Messaging into the car itself, BMW and Nuance are delivering a smarter, safer way to communicate."
Drivers will also be able to use the fully-integrated system's voice recognition to place mobile phone calls and get directions.
The system will recognize US and UK English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. BMW buyers can opt for a 60-day free trial, after which they can enroll in Dragon Drive! as a Nuance service with annual renewal.
