“Good morning. Welcome to ‘Today’ on a Monday morning, and it truly is a new day,” opened Matt Lauer this morning. But instead of Ann Curry next to him, we had her replacement Savannah Guthrie making her official debut at “Today”.
“I’m Matt Lauer and I’m pleased to be sharing this new day with Savannah Guthrie, who after several years of playing a great role on this program, takes a step forward this morning and joins us as co-anchor of `Today.’”
NBC announced to replace Ann Curry as the co-anchor of the show last week, after almost two decades of her service. The Fox News reported that Curry was the scapegoat for the declining ratings of NBC. “Today” show had been the ratings leader since 1996, but was surpassed by ABC’s “Good Morning America” during the first half of 2012.
The new partner of Matt Lauer was chosen to be Savannah Guthrie.
“It’s an honor to be here,” said Guthrie on her official debut.
Guthrie, on her first day, interviewed the former White House press secretary and President Obama’s advisor Robert Gibbs. She will also be traveling to London at the end of July for the Olympics.
Could the new 40-years-old replacement save NBC and its rating? Or was it a mistake on NBC to get rid of Ann Curry? Nielsen reported that 280,000 people were dropped the day after Curry left the show.
