Nissan announced that they will recall a total of 134,000 units of cars. This includes Maxima sedans, 2015-2017 Murano crossovers, and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrids due to the potential that these units may start a fire.
The 134,000 units are mainly in the US and Canada.
According to Nissan, the antilock brake pumps can leak and can cause an electrical short circuit that may lead to a fire.
This is an excerpt from a document from the National Highway Traffic Administration:
"Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 19, 2016, and equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control, 2015-2017 Murano vehicles manufactured August 22, 2014, to August 19, 2016, and equipped with Intelligent Cruise Control, and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrid vehicles manufactured August 22, 2014, to July 19, 2016. The affected vehicles have Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) actuator pumps that may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal electrical circuit board."
Though there are still no reported injuries from a fire related to this report or of the Nissan units mentioned, preliminary precautions should be done.
Nissan said that those who own the said units are advised to park their cars outside until they are fixed. One way to know if your antilock brake pumps leaks is if your ABS light stays illuminated for more than 10 seconds after the engine has been started.
If this is observed, National Highway Traffic Administration advised: "If this occurs, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and to not drive the vehicle."Owners are also advised to call Nissan Roadside Assistance and have their car inspected and towed.
The recall of the vehicles already started but there is still no definite time frame in finishing the recall and repair. Owners should expect a mail from Nissan about the specifics of this matter.
Nissan is expected to check on the units, and if need be, they will repair the ABS actuator, free of charge.
