BMW will partner up with the Institute of Contemporary Art and the mayor of London to open a two weeks exhibition of the BMW Art Car Collection in a landmark car park in Shoreditch as part of London 2012 Festival.
It is the first time for the world-renown automaker’s Art Car Collection to exhibit in the United Kingdom, displaying vehicles painted by 16 international artists. The free exhibit will commence on July 21 and continue until August 4.
“The ICA is delighted to be working with LOCOG, BMW and the Mayor of London’s office on this prestigious project,” said ICA in an statement on Thursday.
“Art Drive! presents an exciting opportunity to reach new and larger audiences. The ICA hopes to take on further projects of this type in order to extend its reach into new spaces across the city.”
The BMW Art Car Collection was started over 35 years ago by Hervé Poulain, a French racing driver and auctioneer, who invited his friend Alexander Calder to design a car that married artistic excellence to “an already perfect object.” A racing car competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1975 was the born of BMW Art Car.
The contributing artists for the exhibit include Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Ernst Fuchs, Robert Rauschenberg, M.J Nelson, Ken Done, Matazo Kayama, Cesar Manrique, Jeff Koons, A.R Penck, Esher Mahlangu, Sandro Chia, Jenny Holzer, and David Hockney.
