The rumored Mercedes AMG R50 seems to be inching closer to the production lines and is projected to have an insane 1,300 hp on tap. That coupled to the sub-2,900-pound curb weight of the vehicle will also provide for a power to weight ratio of unity, enough to propel the R50 to three figure speed mark from rest in just 2 secs.
If that's mind boggling, it's because it truly is as no street legal car ever produced has managed to make the 0 - 60 mph sprint in 2 secs. Much of it owes to the 2.0-liter turbo four that is likely to be powering the hypercar though a F1 derived V6 can't be ruled out either. The engine is designed by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains that also develops the hybrid systems powering the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 cars, AutomobileMag reported.
Further, the engine alone will be producing 1,000 hp while another 300 hp would be contributed by three electric motors - one each for the front wheels while a third would be housed within the transmission setup. No less important is the carbon fiber monocoque build of the car that too will contribute to the stomach wrenching speeds it will be capable of.
From a design perspective, the R50 will derive heavy inspiration from a LeMans prototype, which includes a mid-mounted engine setting, short front deck and a long flowing engine hood. As reported by TopSpeed, the short canopy like roof will be intersected by gullwing doors which also happen to be one of the most distinct design elements of the company's iconic 300SL sports car or the C111 and C112 concepts.
The R50 will also benefit from the company's latest developments in active aerodynamics which includes self-adjusting front flaps, multi-functional rear spoiler and so on. All of these will adjust to allow for least drag at higher speeds while also aiding in vehicle dynamics.
The radical touch extends to the interiors as well where the driver and passenger sit in an F1 like transverse layout. The fully adjustable steering and pedals together with the inflatable seats allow for the most convenient driving position. Also, a head-up display and an LED tachometer will keep the driver abreast of all the driving essentials.
If all of the above seems too insatiable, the good news is the R50 will be on display as next month's Paris Motor show itself.
