Aftermarket specialist Carlex Design has a fresh new take on the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with the interiors done up in, of all things, elephant leather. The said makeover for the SRT Hellcat is strictly on the sole discretion of Carlex Design, Snopes claimed with Dodge not being involved in it in any way.
Apart from the new leather seats, the door panels too have been replaced with those that have a sculpted charred wood. Thereafter, there is dash of engraved silver for the steering which doesn't do much to make the interior look cheery and inviting.
Overall, Carlex Design makeover for the Hellcat does seem to have sort of a hellish look and feel to it. Perhaps a grim reminder of the reality of how the seat covers have been procured.
The tuner in its defence is citing the various permits and certificates it has to prove their acquiring the elephant leather has entirely been in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations. However, while those may save the company from having to face the law, it continues to be pulled up on moral grounds given its choice of leather.
Unfortunately, the best that Carlex Design has been able to do so far in response of all the hue and cry that the incident has incited word wide is drop the term 'Elephant Leather' from the webpage for the SRT Hellcat. That apart, everything else remains the same with the seats continuing to sport seats wrapped in elephant leather.
African elephants have already been classified as a vulnerable species, a dubious distinction that it shares with the African lion, AutoEvolution claimed. What that means is that its numbers have reached a level where further poaching can make the species enlisted under the endangered category.
Under the circumstances, the best that we can do is shunning such models to further discourage companies to go for such a makeover for any car in future.
