Hyundai is presently in discussion with Google, seeking expertise to remain in top of the competitive market. Additionally, Hyundai may also develop an autonomous vehicle in the future.
According to Hyundai Motor president Jeong Jin Haeng, the two companies have multiple common areas that may require cooperation.
However, Jeong is yet to mention of the Korean manufacturer is indeed planning to develop an autonomous car with the help of Google's technology.
Past reports suggest that Hyundai and their affiliate Kia Motors have shied away from joint ventures to manufacture high cost electric cars.
Hyundai is now seeking to transform its go-it-alone strategy and become more open to tie-ups with tech upstarts and Silicon Valley giants to stay relevant in the coming era of connected cars and autonomous driving.
Thus, Hyundai is presently seeking a collaboration with the Silicon Valley giants.
Notably, Hyundai has been among the most aggressive automakers adopting Apple Inc.'s CarPlay and Alphabet Inc.'s Android Auto, which integrate iPhone and Android handsets with car dashboards, according to Bloomberg.
"Hyundai is lagging behind the competition to develop autonomous vehicles," said Ko Tae Bong, senior auto analyst at Hi Investment & Securities Co. "It's not a choice but a critical prerequisite for Hyundai to cooperate with IT companies, such as Google, to survive in the near future."
John Krafcik, the former Hyundai U.S. chief who joined Google in 2015 to lead its self-driving car project, may aid any potential collaboration between the two companies.
Jeong didn't give further details or confirm if the automaker is considering developing autonomous cars with Google.
Meanwhile, Hyundai's shares rose 1.5 percent to 135,000 won in Seoul trading, the biggest gain in almost a week, while the benchmark Kospi Index fell 0.2 percent recently.
Thus, it seems that the proposed collaboration of Hyundai and Google can definitely be a win - win situation for both.
