Bentley's driverless concept car features a holographic butler as the ultimate luxury in self-driving vehicles.
According to Slash Gear, the age of AI-assisted driving and autonomous driving is approaching fast. In this context, most of the high-end automaker brands are seeking new ways of entertaining and making their passengers more comfortable.
For instance, BMW is planning to use the windshield as an augmented reality display, while Mercedes is designing a concept car that features seats that can swing around to face each other. The British carmaker Bentley, on the other side, envisions a concept of the ultimate luxury. Its concept car features a virtual butler to take care of passengers' needs.
In Bentley's vision, an intelligent AI could be implemented in their self-driving concept car to assist passengers and drivers. The digital butler could act as a car-based Siri, offering recommendations, looking up locations and making reservations.
The holographic butler would be the primary interface for the car. The virtual assistant would also combine with the car's self-driving tech and receive commands for choosing a destination. The car would automatically drive to the indicated location.
Stefan Sielaff, Bentley's Director of Design, told recently the publication Car and Driver that the future Bentley cars will feature new connectivity and technologies. A holographic butler would enhance the driving experience and the lives of the company's customers. Sielaff added that in the future will become even more important how these advanced technologies will be integrated into the car's cabin.
The virtual assistant could be added to Bentley's all-electric EXP 10 Speed 6 concept, unveiled last year. We cannot expect to see this holographic butler in production vehicles anytime soon, but at least it gives us an idea on how Bentley luxury car maker envision combining self-driving and personal AI.
Sielaff has indicated that Bentley's self-driving concept car featuring a virtual butler is called Future of Luxury, according to Forbes. Besides the holographic assistant, the driverless ultra-luxury concept includes an elegant coffee table and sleek sofa-style seating.
According to the auto website Evo, Bentley's Future of Luxury concept car also features interior wood panels with seamlessly blended display screens. The advanced screen is based on technology that allows it be embedded into almost any interior material.
Since it's designed to be fully autonomous, Bentley's Future of Luxury concept doesn't have a driver's seat, gearshift, pedals or a steering wheel. In Sielaff's vision the self-driving technology is reshaping car design, because driverless cars won't require those essential interior parts.
