The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pushing for children to always be buckled in on school buses by endorsing three-point seat belts for these vehicles, according to WOWT News.
The U.S. government is supporting the movement to make school bus rides safer for children, reported KRGV. The NHTSA intends to put seatbelts on every school bus in the U.S.
The federal agency argued in the past that school buses are incredibly safe vehicles built to specifically protect their precious cargo, which is why seatbelts were never federally mandated.
The NHTSA "has not always spoken with a clear voice on the issue of seat belts on school buses," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind noted.
The agency previously stated that retrofitting school buses with seat belts would be an expensive venture and that buses, without seat belts, were safe.
"The position of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is that seat belts save lives," Rosekind said. "That is true whether in a passenger car or in a big yellow bus. And saving lives is what we are about. So NHTSA's policy is that every child on every school bus should have a three-point seat belt."
