Officials of the federal safety regulators are investigating a filed complaint that a car owner’s ear was cut in half when a side air bag inflated in a Hyundai Elantra.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this unique complaint on its website on Monday that it will seriously look into this matter and will find out the results soon. The administration also made it clear that whether the same problem is persisting in all the 123,000 numbers of Hyundai Elantra's, which was commissioned to showrooms for the 2012.
According to the complaint, the Elantra owner was driving to a destination and got into an accident. In the course of an accident, the driver's side curtain air bags came out of the socket and an iron curtain ripped the owner's ear in half. The car owner has submitted photos as evidence, which are depicting on how the iron curtain were sticking out the side air bags in the driver's compartment.
"As per the documents and photos submitted by the complainant. It clearly indicates that a metal object seems to have injured the driver a bit seriously. Our technical experts opine that the incident might have been happening due to laceration. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTS) considers this seriously. And we have started probing on what exactly might have caused for such an instance. Once the investigation is completed, in the mean time we will decide on whether it requires the same repair with all the 123,000 Hyundai Elentra models which are built in 2012," wrote NHTSA on its website..
The NHTSA added that it will look into only the loose metal components in the air bags and it will touch upon the safety of the air bags until an incidents being filed on the issue. Hyundai Motors has not yet confirmed on recalling its Elantra models.
