Peugeot Citroen may build cars in India in partnership with global partner General Motors, investing $850 million in its own factory.
GM has a joint venture with China’s Shanghai Automotive industry and sells models such as Chevrolet Beat, Spark, Sail and Enjoy.
“Both the companies will think and chart out strategies to use General Motors plants in India to explore as a re-launch pad for Peugeot vehicles," said Gregoire Olivier, Head of Asian Operations for Peugeot which is Paris based automaker.
"It’s been more than a decade since Peugeot couldn’t manage to return to Indian shores. The company had a long standing dream to make its mark again and we are hopeful that the time may come very soon.
“We are definitely not going to start our own plant and build cars for India. Instead of investing heavily at the initial stages, we now have General Motors as a global partner and we can definitely keep our proposal with them on exploring possibilities of using their plants to produce Peugeot cars in India. The GM has two plants in India right now and they might turn lucky for us. We have every opportunity to enter Indian markets and it would be much safer to think twice than investing 600 Euros,” said Olivier.
Peugeot existed in India during 1997 and marketed its vehicles around the country in a joint venture with Premier Automobile Limited.
“As of now, there are no plans for both General Motors and Peugeot to build cars in India. I mean, it’s too soon to predict any future events. Things are taking place at their own pace. And if things fall in place at the right time there are chances that Peugeot may get to see their vehicles driven around in India,” said P Balendran, Vice President for General Motors, India.
