It's been a long time coming for Lamborghini fans who have waited since the 2012 Beijing Motor Show to find out if the Urus concept would reach production. Now we finally have an answer.
Lamborghini will, in fact, release a production model of its 4x4 concept SUV, and it could debut as early as 2017.
The vehicle will be built at the Italian automaker's Sant'Agata Bolognese plant in Italy and 500 new employees are expected to be hired in order to handle production, according to Reuters.
Company Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann met with Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Rome on Wednesday to officially sign off on the new project.
During the 2015 New York Auto Show, Winkelmann sat down with us for a couple minutes where he said an SUV could be Lamborghini's next big production car.
"It has to be a car that is an all-rounder, in this sense, and it has to be the super-sports car amongst the SUVs, in terms of design but also in terms of performance," said Winkelmann to AutoWorldNews in April.
The concept was listed at 5 feet 6 inches so the production SUV probably won't measure up in size to its competitors, but it will be very fast. The four-seat concept revealed three years ago was touted as one of the fastest SUVs ever, with 600 horses, and one of the lightest, thanks to a carbon fiber body.
We should know official specs closer to the SUV's release date like if it will feature a V10 engine, how much it will cost and interior features.
Either way, expectations will be high for the new vehicle as Lamborghini is hoping to double its annual sales once the SUV is released, according to Reuters. Lamborghini sold 2,530 vehicles in 2014.
