Rolls-Royce's electric car Phantom showcased in New York, but its terrible reviews may indicate that it is not time for the company to go green yet.
The luxury car maker had been testing on electric cars, and the customers are wondering why. Perhaps because of the complaints, Rolls-Royce Phantom may not be in production, at least anytime soon.
“Rolls-Royce owners have shown no interesting an electric Phantom and don’t want smaller engines either,” said Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, CEO of Rolls Royce, in an interview with Automotive News at the New York International Auto Show.
"Customers tell us, ‘Do not mess with the 12-cylinder engine.' It is their Holy Grail, and they love it,” added Torsten. The engine offered by Rolls-Royce is a 6.75-liter 12-cylinder unit.
When the electric-Phantom was exhibited at the auto show, customers found the 8-hour charge time and 120-mile range to be totally "unacceptable" according to Mueller-Oetvoes.
“I can imagine something that combines electric and combustion engines, like a plug-in hybrid. We do not yet have any plans in our hands, but it is something we are currently looking into,” Mueller-Oetvoes added.
