At the Shanghai auto show late yesterday, Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off its second in a growing series of concept cars that stretches the boundaries of the SUV: the blazing yellow Concept GLC Coupe shown above.
As we predicted, the Concept GLC Coupe Concept is a design study that will likely result in a future model with the GLC designation. Much like the GLE Coupe concept that preceded it, the Concept GLC Coupe previews both the replacement for the GLK sport-ute, the GLC, as well as the production GLC Coupe itself.
Under the hood is a 367-hp variant of the biturbo V-6 currently found in the C450 Sport, cementing the "C" connection, mated with that engine's 9-speed automatic transmission, and the concept is equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. It's a production-ready package that's all but ready for the open road.
The GLC and GLC Coupe are expected to play well in China, not the least of the reasons why it was introduced at one of the country's premier auto shows. It's a reminder that Mercedes-Benz is focusing heavily on sport-utility vehicles—note its last several auto show concepts—and is chasing BMW's own X6 and X4.
