General Motors announced Monday that the sales of its more fuel efficient cars in the United States are coming in above 100,000 units, which is a record in the market.
In its announcement, the carmaker reported that the sales figures of its Chevrolet Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Camaro and other eight models rated 30 miles per gallon on highway represent about 40 percent of vehicles sold in March. That leaves GM seeing an increase in sales by 16 percent three years back. The group includes the GMC Terrain SUV and GM’s Chevy Volt, which is a hybrid electric.
On average, surveyed by a media house, GM expects March sales to hit an annualized pace of 14.75 million vehicles, which is an increase from a pace of 13.3 million a year ago but down from 15.1 million in February. The survey predicts that strong numbers from most car manufacturers are driven by the demand of an aging U.S. auto fleet market.
Despite a lineup of mostly heavier and less fuel efficient cars, Chrysler continued its strong streak in the month of March.
