Uber cars now outnumber New York's yellow taxi cabs, which could be a sign of things to come in one of the biggest cities in the world.
Recent figures released by the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission this week showed that there were 14,156 registered Uber cars on the streets of NY, compared to 13,587 yellow taxis.
The number of trips commuters take in yellow cabs still outpaces Uber rides, but that's because Uber drivers work part-time, whereas yellow cabs are often on the road all day.
Nearly 62 percent of Uber drivers work another job, according to a Benenson Strategy Group survey in December, as first reported by the Associated Press.
Yellow taxi cab rides average 485,000 trips per day, or more than 10 times Uber's amount.
"Yellow cab rides significantly outstrip the number of black car rides," said Meera Joshi, chairwoman of the taxi commission, according to the AP report. "So the number of their affiliated vehicles in and of itself doesn't paint a complete picture."
Uber claims on its website that UberX rides are often cheaper, or at least the same price, as the average yellow taxi ride. A number of Uber app users have complained about extra fees however and "surge pricing" during busy time periods like New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day.
The San Francisco-based startup company has seen its popularity grow around the world even while it faces criticism from the taxi industry and governments.
The headquarters of Uber's French branch was raided this week as part of an investigation into its ride-sharing service. Twenty-five officers raided the headquarters for six hours, taking emails and documents from 45 employees and smartphones from Uber drivers, according to France Info.
The company is also banned in other places like Brazil, Germany, Thailand and Spain.
Uber is valued at $40 billion, with operations in 53 countries and 200 cities around the globe.
