Road: State highway 79, outside Julian, Calif.
Listening to: "Nowhere to Run," by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas

Just along the U.S. border with Mexico lie stretches of road and unparalleled scenery. It's no wonder that automakers continue to use this region of the country for new-car introductions; with barely any traffic and fresh tarmac for miles, out here, it's just you and the road. Behind the wheel of the Panamera S e-Hybrid, away from most of civilization, we reveled in the seamlessness of its hybrid system and the smoothness of its ride. The road was clearly signed back to San Diego via major highways, but the urge to break free and keep on traveling—aided by the hybrid Panamera's extended range—remained.

 Perspective.
