Volkswagen made an announcement on Saturday that it will add 800 new jobs at its new Tennessee plant. The latest move came after rebounding car sales are boosting the manufacturing sector.
The auto industry says it will create 800 new jobs at its plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. to ramp up production of the Passat. The new hires at the Chattanooga plant opened in 2011 will push total employment past 3,000, which is 50% more than what the German automaker promised when its plant was started. VW currently employs 2,200 people directly there and 500 more through contractor Aerotek. The plant recently made its 50,000th car.
After reducing jobs at the time of recession, automakers now are trying to squeeze more output from the existing plants before starting new ones. Sales in February 2012 were at good numbers compared to the same month in 2010.
Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, says that the plant at Chattanooga require more number of workers in near future. “Quite plainly, we need more Passats to meet the market demand, and I'm glad that we can respond so quickly by adding staff in Chattanooga,” quickly adds Browning.
