Volkswagen has announced an EV pilot program with 20 E-Golf EV prototypes to be completed in the next nine month in selected U.S. cities.
The program will test the electric vehicles in selected locations with the objective of collecting data and statistics which will help the carmaker to develop Volkswagen EV technology for future applications. The E-Golf battery electric vehicles will be allocated to locations in U.S. such as Detroit, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. In order to test the vehicles in different topographical and meteorological conditions, twelve of the cars are being allocated to Volkswagen employees.
Dr Rudolk Krebs, head of Volkswagen Group E-Traction, says “For a successful market launch of electric vehicles, the way that home chargers are handled is very important, along with easy access to public charging infrastructure.”
Drivers will not only test the EVs, but they will also experiment specific services surrounding the use of EV such as 220 volt charging stations and iPhone apps dedicated to the E-Golf. Every E-Golf will come with an iPhone that lets drivers check the status of charging, adjust the air conditioning, and remotely charge the car.
Volkswagen has also set up a web portal dedicated to the fleet test to support the users 24/7 in case of specific questions and in order to allow users to share their feedback on the E-Golf.
