McLaren has a reputation for making race cars and road cars. Lately a new class of vehicles have been popping up in-between called supercars, which are created for the track but for no set racing series.
The brand new McLaren P1 GTR, set to make its formal debut next month, definitely falls into the supercar category.
Based on the P1, the McLaren P1 GTR comes with a number of upgrades that make it an ideal car for flying around a closed circuit instead of an open road.
Unnecessary elements have been removed to make the vehicle lighter. For example side windows have been replaced by plexiglass and the glass roof has been replaced by carbon fiber. These measures, along with a number of others, cut the curb weight by 110 pounds, according to McLaren.
Other improvements include a revised aero, dropped suspension (by two inches) and a widened track compared to the road-going McLaren P1. The vehicle is also lower to the ground on 19-inch motorsport alloy wheels shod with Pirelli slick tires.
If you're wondering where you've seen the cohesive yellow-and-green paint job before, you probably have. The paintwork, which is just one of many available to car buyers, is a homage to the McLaren F1 GTR #06R that finished on the podium during Le Mans back in 1995, according to the automaker.
The 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain has been upgraded for track use and retuned. McLaren confirmed that the internal combustion engine cranks out 789 horsepower and the electric motor get another 197 hp for a combined output of 986 hp.
It's also worth mentioning those lucky few who purchase a P1 GTR will be inducted into McLaren's Driver Training Program. Drivers will be allowed to attend an initial test session at Silverstone, England, followed by the first on-track activity at Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.
Afterwards, individual driver profiling sessions will take place at the McLaren Technology Center, which are tailored to include a race seat fitting, a Human Performance Centre assessment, and final discussions around the design and livery of each model with McLaren Automotive Design Director Frank Stephenson. Each owner will get the chance to experience the McLaren P1 GTR from the simulator for the first time as well, according to the automaker.
The 1000PS McLaren P1 GTR will make its formal debut alongside the recently announced McLaren 675LT on Stand 1240, Hall 1 at 12.15 CET (11.15 GMT) on Tuesday, 3 March during the 85th International Geneva Motor Show.
It will be released in limited production form for £1,980,000 (or $3,053,833.20).
