Say goodbye to "The Mickyard."
Disney World Speedway, the track that held the first ever race under Indy Racing League sanction in 1996, will no longer be a part of the Magic Kingdom this summer at Walt Disney World, according to a report by the Orlando Sentinel.
The newspaper reports that Walt Disney World Speedway and its program for the Richard Petty Driving Experience will close in late June as Disney prepares for new "transportation projects."
"Disney has other uses for the property, and they have the right to do that, and we respect that," said Bill Scott, executive vice president of attractions operator Petty Holdings LLC. "It's not without some sadness that we leave Walt Disney World Speedway. We had a great home here."
Details on future projects are still up in the air. The speedway is south of the Magic Kingdom parking lot and west of World Drive.
There are about 70 employees, including instructors, photographers and check-in registrars, who currently work at "The Mickyard."
Petty Holdings, operator of Richard Petty Driving Experience and Exotic Driving Experience, confirmed that as of July 1 they will no longer operate their experiences at the WDWS in a statement this week.
"Our main focus at this moment is taking care of our staff and preparing them for the upcoming transition," said Scott. "Any reserved guests prior to July 1 will have the same fantastic experience that we have delivered since 1997 at Walt Disney World Speedway."
Those who are booked after June 30 for Richard Petty Driving Experience or Exotic Driving Experience can call 1.800.237.3889 to reschedule their experience at any of their 14 locations nationwide
The IRL ran its season-opening race there in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
WDWS held two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races in 1997 and 1998 as well, and the Indy Racing Experience was also held there for a time.
