Honda Fit came out with the highest score at the $16,000 Subcompact Shootout, according to Cars.com who launched the event along with USA Today and MotorWeek.
The shootout compared seven different 2012 subcompact models – six recently redesigned – that were under $16,000 and had four seats, four doors, an automatic transmission, and 35 mpg or better. Five experts – three from Cars.com and one each from the others – gave scores that ranged from 513 points to 761. The criteria of the comparison included static (35 percent), driving (35 percent), value (20 percent), and gas mileage (10 percent).
Although Honda Fit had not gone through a redesigning process recently, it still scored the highest among its competitors.
“In addition to confident handling, a solid transmission, great visibility and unmatched practicality, the Honda Fit is just fun to drive and emerged as our clear winner,” said Patrick Olsen of Cars.com.
The second place fell to Kia Rio, which “really has come a long way, offering a strong powertrain and lots of little extras that remain absent among its competitors” according to Olsen.
Other subcompact cars that were tested at the shootout were Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris.
