Car commercials have made up nearly a third of Super Bowl advertising air time each year in the last half-decade, but some brands are reluctant to be part of 2015's upcoming ads.
Ford and Lincoln won't have any Super Bowl commercials in the running this year, while some other auto brands are delaying announcements either way, Automotive News reported. Eleven carmakers contributed Super Bowl ads last year, including Ford.
BMW, Kia, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota are expected to represent the auto industry with Super Bowl ads. Last year, the event became the most-watched television program of all time when 111.5 million viewers tuned in.
While awaiting further news on which auto brands will participate for 2015, check out these five especially epic Super Bowl ads featuring cars.
1. "Strike"
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles made waves at last year's Super Bowl with this surprise ad featuring Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, who was 10 years old at the time. The company's website reportedly crashed the night of the Super Bowl due to an influx of hits.
2. "Godfather"
Referencing a certain iconic scene in the Francis Ford Coppola classic, this ad for the Audi R8 has actor John Marley unleashing a scream upon waking up to find his hands covered in oil and the grille of his luxury car in his bed. The daring tagline? "Old luxury just got put on notice."
3. "Rendezvous"
Jaguar tapped British actors Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong and Tom Hiddleston for its first Super Bowl commercial and the "Good To Be Bad" campaign intended to revamp the luxury automaker's image. The ad showcases Jaguar's F-Type R Coupe.
4. "The Force"
This nod to "Star Wars" featuring a tiny--and surprisingly expressive--Darth Vader became an instant classic, garnering more than 8 million views before it was even broadcast as part of the 2011 Super Bowl.
5. "Dream"
Nissan's 300ZX Twin Turbo from the Z32 series stars in this intriguing commercial, driving through a futuristic landscape under the direction of the renowned Ridley Scott.
