GMC Holds Focus on Strengthening Core Products

DETROIT – Sales slowed in January for GMC with the brand reporting a 9.7-percent decrease in total sales versus the same month last year, but GMC’s core products like the Sierra pickup, Acadia crossover, and Terrain small SUV continue to perform in the marketplace.

“GMC has seen great momentum for over two years,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “We expect that trend to continue as our dealer network and product line get even stronger in 2012.”

The Acadia, which debuted in 2008, had its strongest sales year ever in 2011 with success in major cities like Chicago, one of Acadia’s top three markets annually.

“Powertrain and ride quality are constant points of praise for the Acadia, as well as the flexibility of second- and third-row seating” said Terry D’Arcy, owner of D’Arcy Buick GMC in Joliet, Ill “The introduction of the Denali model was timed well for people coming back for a second Acadia but wanting more features.”

Denali models are more important to GMC than ever, and the Acadia Denali accounts for 31 percent of the model’s sales. Total Acadia sales last month equaled 4870 units, down 14.9 percent versus 2011, but good for its best January since 2008.

Next week, the redesigned 2013 GMC Acadia will debut at the Chicago Auto Show. “It means a lot to have the new Acadia debut here in Chicago,” added D’Arcy. “It’s a very user-friendly show.”

GMC Sierra HD fullsize pickups had a strong January, with total sales up 5.7 percent. Total Sierra sales, including light duty, were down 10.4 percent.

Terrain, Yukon, and Yukon XL sales were also down last month.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, and is one of the industry's healthiest brands. Innovation and engineering excellence is built into all GMC vehicles and the brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain smaller SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC is the only manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid trucks with the Yukon, Yukon Denali SUVs and the Sierra pickup. The new Sierra Heavy Duty pickups are the most capable and powerful trucks in the market.
