The first fully electric racing series continues in Argentina on Jan. 10 as American Marco Andretti drives in the FIA Formula E Buenos Aires ePrix.
The unique event comprising racing rounds in nine cities is the first all-electric racing series ever.
Andretti, who is a nine-year veteran of the Verizon IndyCar Series, will drive the electric-powered Formula E car during the racing weekend in Buenos Aires that marks the fourth race in the new series.
"I've been looking forward to the chance to get behind the wheel of a Formula E car," Andretti said in a statement. "Having never been in the car, it's a bit of an unfamiliar situation for me, but the team's pace looks solid enough for a great result. I like unknown situations; I'm up for the task."
Andretti will be the only American competing at the fourth Formula E round, which will be held in a 12-turn circuit in Puerto Madero.
The racing series features the special Spark-Renault SRT 01E, which was "built by Spark Racing Technology together with a consortium of the leading manufacturers in motorsport," according to FIA Formula E.
For the first season, each team will run four Spark-Renault SRT 01E Formula E cars, two per driver; the second season will become an "open championship" where teams can design and develop their own vehicles as long as they fit FIA technical specifications.
Whether or not they can attend, fans are invited to get involved with the racing series by voting online or through the official Formula E app for their favorite driver. The three drivers who win the most votes from fans score a 5-second boost of power from 200bhp to 240bhp.
Besides voting, the app gives fans an inside look at the racing series with team profiles, driver bios and destination descriptions.
Each round is a one-day event that includes practice and qualifying sessions as well as the official race.
Starting in September and running through June, the inaugural Formula E season will next come to the United States for rounds in Miami, Fl., and Long Beach, Calif., before heading to Monte Carlo, Berlin and London.
