Recall Alert: 2014-'15 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500, 3500 Called Back

Dec 30, 2014 03:00 PM EST | Matt Mercuro

Mercedes-Benz USA has announced that the company is recalling approximately 8,279 2014-'15 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans over a fire risk.

The news was first announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA said that in affected models, oil could leak from around the chain tensioner gasket. The leaking oil could be a road hazard for other cars on the road.

"In the affected vehicles, oil may leak from around the chain tensioner gasket area," said NHTSA in its summary of the recall on Tuesday. "Leaking oil may drip onto a hot engine surface, increasing the risk of a fire. Additionally, the leaking oil may be a road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash."

Mercedes-Benz has not announced if there are any injuries, crashes or fatalities linked to the recall.

All of the affected vehicles involved in the recall were manufactured from February 28, 2014 to November 21, 2014, according to NHTSA.

Mercedes-Benz dealers are being instructed to replace all chain tensioner gaskets.

The recall first began back on December 10.

Owners with more questions are welcome to contact Mercedes at 1-877-762-8267 for information on the recall.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter owners can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or visit www.safecar.gov.

The NHTSA also announced this week that it decided to end a three-year-old probe that looked into 281,000 Mercedes Benz vehicles over suspected fuel leaks and fuel odors.

The safety administration opened the investigation back in 2012 after receiving 20 reports that called into question the 2003-2006 E55 AMG vehicle and was later expanded to include all 2003-2008 E-Class cars, according to documents released.

Some owners complained that they smelled strong odors of gasoline fuel inside and outside the vehicle after refilling the fuel tank. Some complained that the fuel leaked from the fuel filter/sender.
