Honda CR-V, Toyota Prius, Subaru Forester Named to IIHS Top Safety Pick+ List

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has announced its list of highest-scoring passenger cars and trucks, and the cohort has grown to 71 for 2015.

Of the new vehicles deemed safest, IIHS has designated 33 of them as Top Safety Pick+, one measure safer than their Top Safety Pick counterparts.

That means more choices than ever for buyers looking for the safest choice. Five of the standouts:

Acura MDX: A host of safety equipment makes it one of the safest SUVs on the road.
Honda CR-V: The SUV that won us over also took top marks in crashworthiness.
Infiniti Q50: In addition to being a standout to drive, it's also likely to keep you safe in a crash.
Toyota Prius / Prius V: The nation's favored hybrids performed well after adjustments from last year's tests.
Toyota Sienna: It's the only minivan on this year's list of top performers

What makes a car or truck eligible to be called a Top Safety Pick+? According to IIHS, it must first achieve "a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test and a good rating in each of the Institute's four other crashworthiness evaluations." Only vehicles with active safety systems that can autonomously apply brake pressure without driver assistance, including forward collision warning and active braking, can be called Top Safety Pick+.

IIHS updates its list on a yearly basis, and receives funding from auto insurance companies.
