Nissan has announced a recall for 238,000 Altima sedans that have hood latch issues, the automaker said today.

Around 219,000 of the recalled vehicles, which are from the 2013 model year, are in the United States, Reuters reported. About 10,000 Altimas are in Canada, 5,000 in Mexico, 2,000 in South Korea and 1,000 in Puerto Rico, while the remainder is sprinkled throughout Latin American and Asian markets.

"Nissan became aware of a small number of incidents in which the hood came open while the car was moving, causing damage to the car itself," the automaker said in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Nissan is not aware of any accidents or injuries in connection with the recall.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from a combination of interference between two hood components and debris and corrosion.

The sedan model is Nissan's biggest seller in North America, accounting for more than a quarter of the brand's U.S. sales through September.

The recalled Altima vehicles were manufactured between March 6, 2012 and Feb. 28, 2013, according to Edmunds.com.

While the automaker has not yet set a date for the recall, owners can contact their local dealership or call Nissan at 1-800-647-7261. The recall will involve a repair and cleanup job where dealers modify the hood's latch lever and clean and lubricate the secondary latch joint; the latch assembly may be replaced if needed, USA TODAY reported.
