Federal regulators have launched a probe into around 938,000 Ford midsized sedans that can reportedly have loss of steering power and other steering issues.

The preliminary evaluation affects select models of the Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid, Lincoln MKZ and MKZ Hybrid and Mercury Milan that date from 2010-'12, Reuters reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware of 508 complaints from owners who report loss of power steering and difficulty steering sedans equipped with a certain type of electric power-assisted steering. Of the more than 500 reports, four incidents of steering issues allegedly resulted in crashes, but no injuries or deaths have been reported in connection with the problem.

"Many of the complaints indicated observing a power steering warning message as the failure occurred. In some cases, the condition was corrected by turning the vehicle off and restarting. However, many reports indicate the condition returned again after restart," the agency said in a statement quoted by the Detroit News.

The automaker is cooperating in the NHTSA probe, a Ford spokeswoman told Reuters. The company has also submitted Early Warning Reporting field report data to federal regulators. 

Marking the first step in a process, a preliminary evaluation could lead to a recall depending on what regulators discover.
