General Motors has announced promising first orders for its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks, saying that dealers have ordered five times as many of the models as was expected.

Dealer orders for the midsize pickups are 28,000 for the Colorado and 14,000 for the Canyon, USA TODAY reported. While they hint at strong future sales, dealer orders are essentially speculation since they are based on how many models the dealer believes will sell.

The most common versions of both pickups are expected to get fuel mileage rated at 3 to 5 gallons better than competing models, according to GM. The new trucks recently began production and are expected at dealerships in the fall.

Models with V-6 engines and automatic transmission, the most typical version, are expected to get EPA ratings of 18 miles per gallon in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg for the combined rating.

GM announced pricing for the sibling 2015 GMC Canyon and the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado models last month. Both midsize pickup models were last built in August 2012 and were not offered in either of the last two years.

The new Canyon starts at $21,880, which includes $925 in destination fees, while the Chevrolet Colorado is priced at $20,995 with $895 for shipping.

GM has said that plenty of car shoppers would like a smaller truck but don't want to give up the lower price and better mileage of a full-size version.

"Not everyone needs full-size capability, but they still deserve strength and true truck attributes that come in larger models," Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC marketing, said in a statement.

GM has said that more details on pricing and EPA fuel economy estimates for both of the new pickups will be released before the sales launch.
