2012 Chevrolet Sonic Recalled Over Transmission Issue

General Motors is recalling over 20,000 2012 Chevrolet Sonic compact cars equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, according to a company statement.

The vehicles are being recalled because the transmission turbine shaft may fracture.

"If this were to occur in the first or second gear, the vehicle could not upshift into third through six gears. If the turbine shaft fractured while in one of the higher gears, the vehicle would coast until it was moving slow enough to downshift into first or second gear.

Dealers are being instructed to replace the transmission turbine shaft.

Repairs will be made free of charge.

GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities linked to the recall, and that the problem was "a result of a supplier quality issue."

GM warned drivers what could happen if the shaft fractures.

"In both instances, a malfunction indicator lamp may illuminate. If driven in this condition for a long period of time, all forward gears may become inoperable," said GM regarding the issue. "The engine would continue to run and all power accessories would function."

Approximately 21,567 vehicles are affected by the recall.

This recall is part of a larger GM recall of four vehicles announced by the automaker on June 13.

The larger recall covers approximately 581,367 vehicles.
