InterDigital, a firm that collects and licenses patents, has announced a licensing deal with Samsung that will cease litigation between the two companies.

The firm, which has become a more controversial company in its area, said in the announcement that it had reached a "royalty bearing license agreement" on all Samsung 3G, 4G, and "certain future generation wireless products," CNET reported.

InterDigital, which sued Samsung last year for allegedly violating its patents, hasn't disclosed its cut from each sale of a Samsung device. The agreement between the two companies will last through 2017 with the option to extend it another decade.

The licensing firm has acquired a plethora of patents over the years and licenses them to various technology companies, suing if the companies don't comply. When InterDigital sued Samsung last year, it asked the International Trade Commission to ban Samsung from importing products into the U.S.

Samsung said it was not guilty of patent infringement, claiming it would fight the lawsuit. The company hasn't given a reason for its change of heart.

Called a "patent troll" by some, InterDigital was reportedly considered for purchase by Apple, Nokia and Qualcomm in 2011, according to Reuters. The three tech companies were apparently looking to acquire InterDigital's substantial library of patents.
