2014 Nissan Rogue Ranked 'Top Safety Pick' by IIHS

The updated 2014 Nissan Rogue has received top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Earning the highest ranking of "Top Safety Pick," the new Rogue was commended for its standard safety, security and technology features, according to Nissan.

The 2014 model earned a score of "Good" in all categories tested as well as "Top Safety Pick Plus" status  for versions with the optional forward collision warning feature.

"In the small overlap test, the driver's space was maintained reasonably well. Injury measures recorded on the dummy indicated low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity," IIHS described. "The dummy's head made good contact with the front airbag, which stayed in position during the crash, and the side curtain airbag deployed to protect the head from contact with side structures."

IIHS tested the SUV in safety categories that included the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint evaluations, as well the small overlap front test. For the first time this year, vehicles also needed to "earn a basic, advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention," IIHS said.

The Nissan Rogue received approval for its airbag system, seat belts, child safety rear door locks and anti-theft alarm system.

The standard trim also has several safety technologies, including Active Trace Control, Active Engine Braking and Active Ride Control. All three technology features help the vehicle to drive more smoothly by automatically applying the brakes and adjusting engine torque.

"Nissan has a long-standing commitment to safety and innovation, and this IIHS rating is a very important milestone for the all-new 2014 Rogue," Fred Diaz, a Nissan senior vice president, said in a press release.

"Rogue is the second best-selling vehicle in Nissan's lineup, and with its standard and available safety features, we're bringing a new level of affordable technologies and innovations to a growing segment looking for fresh ideas."
