Toyota Recall: 700,000 Prius Vehicles Affected in U.S. by Software Issue

Toyota is recalling its 2010-'14 Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles to repair a software issue that could cause the vehicle to shut down automatically.

Approximately 700,000 vehicles are affected in U.S., and over 1.9 million are affected worldwide.

"Toyota will update the motor/generator control ECU (electronic control unit) and hybrid control ECU software on certain model year 2010-'14 Prius vehicles," said Toyota in a statement on its company site this week. "The software's current settings could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged.

The automaker has not received any reports of injuries or accidents caused by the issue in the U.S.

Toyota dealers will be instructed to update the software in affected models, free of charge.

"If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to release a report regarding the recall.

Toyota said all owners will receive a letter regarding the recall when the software updates are available.
